Keep in touch!

Many of you will be leaving Dundee for the summer, but remember that we will still be here if you need any help and support.

If you cannot come in to see us at the Enquiry Desk you can still email us at library@abertay.ac.uk, phone us on 01382 308833 or send us an instant message via the Meebo Ask a Librarian link on the portal.

Renewing books over the summer

Students who are leaving Dundee for the summer will be able to take books on loan with them and, unless someone reserves the book, be able to keep it for the duration of the holidays.

You will still need to renew your books either online, by email or over the phone otherwise you will incur overdue charges, but the usual restriction of only 4 renewals has been lifted for the vacation period.

Summer opening hours

Now that the majority of students have finished their coursework and exams for the session, the Library is operating with reduced opening hours.
We will be open Monday and Wednesday - Friday 08:45 - 16:50, Tuesday 08:45 - 19:50, but will be closed at the weekend.
We hope that opening later on Tuesdays will give students who still have work to complete the opportunity to use the Library even if they have daytime commitments.
Summer opening hours will be in place from 28th May - 11th September.
Please let us know how you find the new arrangements - pop a postcard in one of the suggestion boxes around the Library or email us at library@abertay.ac.uk

Graduating in July?

All students who are planning to graduate in July this year must return all library books by the end of May.
Students with outstanding library loans, even if they are not overdue, will not be allowed to graduate.

Longer opening hours

At this time of year we know students are under pressure with exams approaching and plenty of course work still to be done. To help you make the most of your time the Library will stay open later Monday - Thursday, from Monday 21st March. From then right through to the end of May we will be open until 02:00 a.m.

The Enquiry Desk will still close at the same time (20.50) - the extra opening hours will be for study, PC/printer access and self-service only. Friday, Saturday and Sunday opening times are unchanged.

Let us know whether you find this additional library opening useful. Is 02.00 a reasonable time to close? Can you access everything you need in the Library when the Enquiry Desk closes?

Honours dissertation workshops

If you haven't been able to get a place on the first workshops, register your interest and if there are enough names we will run another one.
You can register at http://applications.abertay.ac.uk/internal/IS/Training/ then choose Information Skills.

New payment options

Library users can now pay for lost student cards, lost books or library overdue charges of £5.00 or more via the University's online store.
This new service is in addition to the existing payment methods - in person at the Library Enquiry Desk or by phone using a debit/credit card.

Writing your Honours dissertation

Do you know where to find the guidelines for formatting your dissertation?
Do you know how to automatically create a table of contents and an index in a long Word document?
Are you absolutely sure you have used all the relevant library resources for your topic?

If you answer no to even one of these questions – sign up for one of the workshops on Tuesday 8 March or Wednesday 16 March from 2-4pm.

The workshop will cover:
  • Structuring the different sections of your dissertation eg results, discussion, and using the correct academic writing style
  • Writing your dissertation in the correct format – it’s easier doing it as you go rather than at the end
  • Making sure you are using the most useful library resources for your topic, and creating your reference list with minimum effort using reference management software

Disruption to library services

Essential maintenance is scheduled for this weekend (18th - 20th February) at Edinburgh University, which will cause serious disruption to library services.
Our live library management system will go down at 16:45 on Friday and will not be back up until 08:30 on Monday morning.
We will be able to issue items from the Enquiry Desk over the weekend, but these will not be loaded in to the library system until Monday morning. We will have no access to account information, therefore we cannot renew any items that are not present or take any payments for overdue books. There will also be no holds or recalls available.
Once the Enquiry Desk closes there will be no borrowing possible at all, so please make sure you get all the books you need before the Enquiry Desk closes (18:50 on Friday, 16:50 on Saturday and Sunday). If you have books to hand back you can still put them in to the bookdrop in the foyer, but they will not be taken off your account until Monday morning and we will not be able to give you a receipt.
The library catalogue will still appear to be available, but it will be a read-only version which will enable you to search for books, but not to log in to your account to renew items or check return dates. The catalogue data will be from 17/2/11 and so availability information will not be completely accurate (i.e. any books taken out or returned after 17/2 will not be recorded).
Apologies for all the recent disruption there has been with the library system. It should all settle down after this weekend.

Library opening hours

From Monday 21st March 2011 the Library will be open until 2am Monday to Thursday. It is unstaffed after 9pm.

However during self-service opening you can:
Borrow and return items using the self service machines in the foyer; use printers and photocopiers in the Library; use the scanner and data transfer PC; top up print/photocopy accounts through the print credit kiosk in the foyer; use study facilities; access vending snacks and drinks; and ask library helpers for assistance with printing/photocopying problems, using the library catalogue, collecting a reservation or finding books on the shelves.

EndNote connection to Library catalogue

We are having a temporary problem with this, which we hope will be resolved very soon. If you need to add a library book to an EndNote library in the meantime, use the New reference option and add the details to the relevant fields.

Ask a Librarian service

Remember that you can ask for help online using our Ask a Librarian service, which is generally staffed 09.00-17.00h. Follow the link from any of our Library web pages https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library

Changes to short loan borrowing

Feedback from students indicates that the return time of 10:00am the following day deters some of them from borrowing short loans.
From Monday 17th January 2011, the short loan return time will be 13.00 on the day after issue. It does not matter what time of day you borrow a short loan book, it will be due back by 13.00 on the following day (weekends excepted).
Short loan bookings will also take effect from 13.00 each day - i.e. if you book a short loan in advance you should collect it from the Enquiry Desk between 13.00 - 14.30 on the day of your booking. Any bookings not collected will be returned to the shelves for other students to use.
Please remember that overdue charges on short loan books are high to ensure that they are kept available for as many students as possible and that you cannot renew short loans.

Group Study Room bookings

Students can now book library group study rooms online. Request a room booking from the Timetables section of the portal. Click on Room Booking Request and complete the mandatory fields. Please mention in either the preferred room field or the nature of booking field, that you wish to book a library group study room. Please remember to complete the number of attendees field as well.
Your request can only be attended to during normal office hours. Applications sent at evenings and weekends will be reviewed the following working day. You will receive an email confirming which room has been booked for you. Please note that same day bookings cannot be accepted and bookings for a group are limited to a maximum of one 2-hour block a day.
This is an additional service. Students can still book a group study room using the existing methods - i.e. in person at the Enquiry Desk or through instant messaging, phone or email.

Computers and Applied Science Complete

The Library now subscribes to Computers and Applied Sciences Complete - which contains over 1300 academic journals and professional publications on the subject of engineering, computing, computer theory & systems and new technologies. Over 500 journals are available in full-text.
On campus, you do not need to log in. Off campus, select UK Higher Education then University of Abertay Dundee and log in with your Abertay username and password.
