What's happening in the Library

During registration we have several different activities in the Library. The IT Training Suite on Level 2 has been set up for new students to self-enrol using online registration. Remember that new students must still come to their registration session in person to complete registration, get their IT account and student card and have their IT and library induction. These registration sessions will take place in IT Cluster 1 from 11th - 19th September.

The IT and Library induction session for new students will take place on Level 2 from 11th - 19th September.

On Level 3, Room 3.05 has been set aside for international students to complete their SAAS applications. IT Cluster 3 has also been set up as a dedicated area for pre-registration international students to use so that they can contact friends and family.

Returning students will be able to use the PCs by the windows on Level 3 or on Level 4. If you are a returning student remember that you must re-register. You can do this online from any PC with an internet connection. If you would like to speak to someone in person about re-registering come along to one of the sessions on Level 1 of the Library. Friday 19th in the afternoon has been set aside for helping returning students to re-register and both Finance and Registry staff will be available.

During registration our usual zoning policy has been suspended, but please be considerate towards others when you are using the Library

Changes to interlibrary loan charges

From Monday 1st September, charges for interlibrary loans will be as follows:
  • Interlibrary Loan application/request = £4.00 each (Undergrads and Taught Postgrads; Staff and Research students are not required to pay this charge)
  • Fines for late return = £3.40 (All staff/students)
  • Renewals = £3.40 (All staff/students)

These changes are due to the British Library increasing the cost of this service.

New Library Web Pages

The new Library home page is at https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library

Once there, you can link to various content-rich pages, including Subject Guides, which bring together all your key electronic resources, websites and other useful resources and guidance.

If you are looking for a specific named journal, the quickest route is to click on 'Find a journal' from the Library home page.

Some of the library web pages are still under construction: please be patient as we fill in the gaps. We are grateful for any feedback on problems, typos etc. As you know, we have also recently switched over from Athens to Shibboleth authentication, so please do report any difficulties you experience when accessing electronic resources, as there may be multiple factors involved!

Welcome

A very warm welcome to all summer school and pre-sessional students arriving this week. We hope you find everything you need in the Library, but please ask at the Enquiry Desk if you have any questins. We look forward to working with you.

Changes to login procedures

From 1st August, The University has switched its login method for library databases, electronic journals and books from the old Athens system to a new product known as UK federation or Shibboleth. You will continue to use your Abertay username and password to access resources. Further details and guidance on how to use the new system can be found at:

https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library/find/accessingeresources

If you experience or have any questions regarding the change then please contact us on Infodesk@abertay.ac.uk or (01382 308899)

SCOPUS no longer available - but use Web of Knowledge

We no longer have access to the SCOPUS database. We were fortunate to have access to SCOPUS for 3 years at a discounted price. However, this introductory offer has now ceased. Following a period of consultation with academic staff, the decision was made to cancel SCOPUS and retain access to the Web of Knowledge database, as we could not sustain both products. WoK provides vital information for the management of research at Abertay.

You can find Web of Knowledge in the Virtual Library > Databases > Multidisciplinary section. WoK includes access to the Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Humanities Citation Index. It may be accessed on or off campus. Like SCOPUS, WoK provides access to references and abstracts of articles and conference papers, with some links to full text where Abertay subscribes to the particular journal.

Remember, the Virtual Library also includes many subject specific databases, some with full text.

New look for our Portal homepage

A new-look Portal homepage for students will be launched at the end of March - but first we want to know what you think. Based on feedback from over 250 students in our recent survey, we have taken on board your comments and given the homepage a facelift.

We welcome views from everyone, students and staff, so please view the new homepage
then tell us what you think, before 24 March, by contacting us at portal@abertay.ac.uk.

The survey on students’ views of the Portal homepage was carried out in December 2007. The aim was to find out what students consider to be the most important and relevant links on the homepage, what they think about the layout and whether the language and labels used to describe content and services is sufficiently intuitive. For a full report of the survey results, read A student's eye view of the Portal homepage
in the January issue of IS Update.

Help us redesign the Virtual Library

The Virtual Library is one of the main online destinations for Abertay students and staff. But it was designed about 10 years ago and hasn't kept pace with how you search for and use information. Your feedback tells us that it is not always easy to find what you are looking for, whether journal articles on a particular topic, how to renew your books online or when the library is open.

We are looking for staff and students to take part in usability testing - we already have over 150 student volunteers so are particularly keen to hear from staff who would like to try out our new design. We will be doing our first tests in early February 2008 and the results will feed into the next stage. We also want your ideas on the look and feel - how would you like the Library website to look. If you would be interested in taking part in the testing (it should take 30-45 minutes of your time) or to find out more about the project, please email Julie Shortreed
