New payment options

Library users can now pay for lost student cards, lost books or library overdue charges of £5.00 or more via the University's online store.
This new service is in addition to the existing payment methods - in person at the Library Enquiry Desk or by phone using a debit/credit card.

Writing your Honours dissertation

Do you know where to find the guidelines for formatting your dissertation?
Do you know how to automatically create a table of contents and an index in a long Word document?
Are you absolutely sure you have used all the relevant library resources for your topic?

If you answer no to even one of these questions – sign up for one of the workshops on Tuesday 8 March or Wednesday 16 March from 2-4pm.

The workshop will cover:
  • Structuring the different sections of your dissertation eg results, discussion, and using the correct academic writing style
  • Writing your dissertation in the correct format – it’s easier doing it as you go rather than at the end
  • Making sure you are using the most useful library resources for your topic, and creating your reference list with minimum effort using reference management software

Disruption to library services

Essential maintenance is scheduled for this weekend (18th - 20th February) at Edinburgh University, which will cause serious disruption to library services.
Our live library management system will go down at 16:45 on Friday and will not be back up until 08:30 on Monday morning.
We will be able to issue items from the Enquiry Desk over the weekend, but these will not be loaded in to the library system until Monday morning. We will have no access to account information, therefore we cannot renew any items that are not present or take any payments for overdue books. There will also be no holds or recalls available.
Once the Enquiry Desk closes there will be no borrowing possible at all, so please make sure you get all the books you need before the Enquiry Desk closes (18:50 on Friday, 16:50 on Saturday and Sunday). If you have books to hand back you can still put them in to the bookdrop in the foyer, but they will not be taken off your account until Monday morning and we will not be able to give you a receipt.
The library catalogue will still appear to be available, but it will be a read-only version which will enable you to search for books, but not to log in to your account to renew items or check return dates. The catalogue data will be from 17/2/11 and so availability information will not be completely accurate (i.e. any books taken out or returned after 17/2 will not be recorded).
Apologies for all the recent disruption there has been with the library system. It should all settle down after this weekend.

Library opening hours

From Monday 21st March 2011 the Library will be open until 2am Monday to Thursday. It is unstaffed after 9pm.

However during self-service opening you can:
Borrow and return items using the self service machines in the foyer; use printers and photocopiers in the Library; use the scanner and data transfer PC; top up print/photocopy accounts through the print credit kiosk in the foyer; use study facilities; access vending snacks and drinks; and ask library helpers for assistance with printing/photocopying problems, using the library catalogue, collecting a reservation or finding books on the shelves.

EndNote connection to Library catalogue

We are having a temporary problem with this, which we hope will be resolved very soon. If you need to add a library book to an EndNote library in the meantime, use the New reference option and add the details to the relevant fields.
