Summon - search for journal articles etc. at Abertay

Have you tried Summon yet, for finding journal articles, books, e-books in any or all of the collections we subscribe to?

Keep in touch!

Many of you will be leaving Dundee for the summer, but remember that we will still be here if you need any help and support.

If you cannot come in to see us at the Enquiry Desk you can still email us at library@abertay.ac.uk, phone us on 01382 308833 or send us an instant message via the Meebo Ask a Librarian link on the portal.

Renewing books over the summer

Students who are leaving Dundee for the summer will be able to take books on loan with them and, unless someone reserves the book, be able to keep it for the duration of the holidays.

You will still need to renew your books either online, by email or over the phone otherwise you will incur overdue charges, but the usual restriction of only 4 renewals has been lifted for the vacation period.

Summer opening hours

Now that the majority of students have finished their coursework and exams for the session, the Library is operating with reduced opening hours.
We will be open Monday and Wednesday - Friday 08:45 - 16:50, Tuesday 08:45 - 19:50, but will be closed at the weekend.
We hope that opening later on Tuesdays will give students who still have work to complete the opportunity to use the Library even if they have daytime commitments.
Summer opening hours will be in place from 28th May - 11th September.
Please let us know how you find the new arrangements - pop a postcard in one of the suggestion boxes around the Library or email us at library@abertay.ac.uk

Graduating in July?

All students who are planning to graduate in July this year must return all library books by the end of May.
Students with outstanding library loans, even if they are not overdue, will not be allowed to graduate.

Longer opening hours

At this time of year we know students are under pressure with exams approaching and plenty of course work still to be done. To help you make the most of your time the Library will stay open later Monday - Thursday, from Monday 21st March. From then right through to the end of May we will be open until 02:00 a.m.

The Enquiry Desk will still close at the same time (20.50) - the extra opening hours will be for study, PC/printer access and self-service only. Friday, Saturday and Sunday opening times are unchanged.

Let us know whether you find this additional library opening useful. Is 02.00 a reasonable time to close? Can you access everything you need in the Library when the Enquiry Desk closes?

Honours dissertation workshops

If you haven't been able to get a place on the first workshops, register your interest and if there are enough names we will run another one.
You can register at http://applications.abertay.ac.uk/internal/IS/Training/ then choose Information Skills.

New payment options

Library users can now pay for lost student cards, lost books or library overdue charges of £5.00 or more via the University's online store.
This new service is in addition to the existing payment methods - in person at the Library Enquiry Desk or by phone using a debit/credit card.

Writing your Honours dissertation

Do you know where to find the guidelines for formatting your dissertation?
Do you know how to automatically create a table of contents and an index in a long Word document?
Are you absolutely sure you have used all the relevant library resources for your topic?

If you answer no to even one of these questions – sign up for one of the workshops on Tuesday 8 March or Wednesday 16 March from 2-4pm.

The workshop will cover:
  • Structuring the different sections of your dissertation eg results, discussion, and using the correct academic writing style
  • Writing your dissertation in the correct format – it’s easier doing it as you go rather than at the end
  • Making sure you are using the most useful library resources for your topic, and creating your reference list with minimum effort using reference management software

Disruption to library services

Essential maintenance is scheduled for this weekend (18th - 20th February) at Edinburgh University, which will cause serious disruption to library services.
Our live library management system will go down at 16:45 on Friday and will not be back up until 08:30 on Monday morning.
We will be able to issue items from the Enquiry Desk over the weekend, but these will not be loaded in to the library system until Monday morning. We will have no access to account information, therefore we cannot renew any items that are not present or take any payments for overdue books. There will also be no holds or recalls available.
Once the Enquiry Desk closes there will be no borrowing possible at all, so please make sure you get all the books you need before the Enquiry Desk closes (18:50 on Friday, 16:50 on Saturday and Sunday). If you have books to hand back you can still put them in to the bookdrop in the foyer, but they will not be taken off your account until Monday morning and we will not be able to give you a receipt.
The library catalogue will still appear to be available, but it will be a read-only version which will enable you to search for books, but not to log in to your account to renew items or check return dates. The catalogue data will be from 17/2/11 and so availability information will not be completely accurate (i.e. any books taken out or returned after 17/2 will not be recorded).
Apologies for all the recent disruption there has been with the library system. It should all settle down after this weekend.

Library opening hours

From Monday 21st March 2011 the Library will be open until 2am Monday to Thursday. It is unstaffed after 9pm.

However during self-service opening you can:
Borrow and return items using the self service machines in the foyer; use printers and photocopiers in the Library; use the scanner and data transfer PC; top up print/photocopy accounts through the print credit kiosk in the foyer; use study facilities; access vending snacks and drinks; and ask library helpers for assistance with printing/photocopying problems, using the library catalogue, collecting a reservation or finding books on the shelves.

EndNote connection to Library catalogue

We are having a temporary problem with this, which we hope will be resolved very soon. If you need to add a library book to an EndNote library in the meantime, use the New reference option and add the details to the relevant fields.

Ask a Librarian service

Remember that you can ask for help online using our Ask a Librarian service, which is generally staffed 09.00-17.00h. Follow the link from any of our Library web pages https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library

Changes to short loan borrowing

Feedback from students indicates that the return time of 10:00am the following day deters some of them from borrowing short loans.
From Monday 17th January 2011, the short loan return time will be 13.00 on the day after issue. It does not matter what time of day you borrow a short loan book, it will be due back by 13.00 on the following day (weekends excepted).
Short loan bookings will also take effect from 13.00 each day - i.e. if you book a short loan in advance you should collect it from the Enquiry Desk between 13.00 - 14.30 on the day of your booking. Any bookings not collected will be returned to the shelves for other students to use.
Please remember that overdue charges on short loan books are high to ensure that they are kept available for as many students as possible and that you cannot renew short loans.

Abertay logon required on and off campus.

Group Study Room bookings

Students can now book library group study rooms online. Request a room booking from the Timetables section of the portal. Click on Room Booking Request and complete the mandatory fields. Please mention in either the preferred room field or the nature of booking field, that you wish to book a library group study room. Please remember to complete the number of attendees field as well.
Your request can only be attended to during normal office hours. Applications sent at evenings and weekends will be reviewed the following working day. You will receive an email confirming which room has been booked for you. Please note that same day bookings cannot be accepted and bookings for a group are limited to a maximum of one 2-hour block a day.
This is an additional service. Students can still book a group study room using the existing methods - i.e. in person at the Enquiry Desk or through instant messaging, phone or email.

Computers and Applied Science Complete

The Library now subscribes to Computers and Applied Sciences Complete - which contains over 1300 academic journals and professional publications on the subject of engineering, computing, computer theory & systems and new technologies. Over 500 journals are available in full-text.
On campus, you do not need to log in. Off campus, select UK Higher Education then University of Abertay Dundee and log in with your Abertay username and password.

Library closure over the holiday period

Lots of students will be looking forward to a break after exams and before the start of second semester. We know, however, that lots of you still have course work to prepare and are planning to work during the University closure. The Library will be closed between 24/12/10 and 4/1/11 inclusive, but all the usual e-resources and online services that you can access off-campus will still be available.

If you need help using any of our resources don't forget that we have online guides that you may find useful. Just go to the self-help tab on the portal page for further details.

We will re-open on 5th January and will be offering a full service, including unstaffed self-service until midnight (Monday - Thursday) from that date.

New AV equipment booking system

We launched our new AV equipment booking system on Monday 13th December. Access to the booking form will be the same as at present - through the Information Services - Audio Visual Support page on the portal, but the form itself will allow you to see images and full descriptions of the items you book and you can check availability in advance to lessen the chances of your booking having to be rejected.
We would welcome any comments on the new system. Please email enquirydesk@abertay.ac.uk or pop a card in one of the suggestion boxes round the Library.

Library opening hours

Our longer opening hours have been in operation for a couple of weeks now, so we'd really appreciate some feedback on whether you find the extra opening useful? We're open until midnight Monday - Thursday and until 10.00pm on Friday and Sunday.
The Sunday late night opening is something new for this session in response to some suggestions we had last session.

National e-books survey - the results

We recently promoted a survey on e-books that many of you took part in. This survey was run at universities across the UK and over 23,000 staff and students participated. This was the second survey run as part of the JISC national e-books observatory project. The surveys were exploring current awareness, perceptions and attitudes towards e-books and looking to see if these changed between 2008 and 2009. Thank you for participating.

Some headline findings:
  • Use of e-books for study increased for students from 61.4% in 2008 to 64.4% in 2009 but the highest increase was use by staff, which increased from 58.9% to 64.9%.
  • Surprisingly, over 63% of respondents said that they read the content of e-books from a screen with only around 6% printing pages out, however, the average time spent reading was only between 11 and 20 minutes.
  • Over 54% of respondents said that they dip in and out of e-book chapters with only around 8% reading a whole chapter.
  • Encouragingly, the percentage of teaching staff recommending e-books to students and placing direct links to them via the virtual learning environment or online reading lists increased between 2008 and 2009.
  • Most staff and students get access to their e-books via the university library and dependency on this access had increased by 2009.
  • Satisfaction with the availability of print textbooks through the library increased from 2008 to 2009 and this may be due to the availability of more e-books taking the pressure off the print copies.

The results of the surveys will be used to develop the e-books market to help make sure that staff and students can get access to the books they need either in print or electronic format.

Genome Medicine publishes its first research article

The BioMedCentral open access journal Genome Medicine is proud to announce the publication of its first research article. The article, titled ‘A kernel-based integration of genome-wide data for clinical decision support’, reports work by Bart de Moor’s group at the University of Leuven and describes a novel algorithm that allows the integration of genome-wide data from different sources and leads to improved clinical outcome prediction from cancer data sets.

Genome Medicine publishes research articles of outstanding quality in all areas of medicine studied from a genomic or post-genomic perspective. The journal also regularly publishes reviews, minireviews and commentaries that assess progress in the management of health and disease informed from genomic and post-genomic research, as well as the ethical, social and legal challenges associated with developments in this emerging field. Genome Medicine is led by six renowned Section Editors and supported by an internationally recognized Editorial Board.

New books in the library

Did you know you can check out the latest books in the library by searching our New Books?
Here's a small selection - the titles link to our LibraryThing collection where you can see reviews, tags and desciptions. Once there, click on Details for the book to see the Abertay record and find a link to our catalogue to see if it's available. Let us know what you think of these features by emailing infodesk@abertay.ac.uk or leaving a comment.

New recycling bins in the Library

Recycling bins are now in place in the Time Out Area on Level 1 of the Library. There are three bins, one for paper, one for plastic bottles and one for all other waste.

These bins are in addition to the paper recycling bins that can be found in the Print Rooms and by the Level 1 printer and photocopier.

Here in the Library many students bring in bottled water to drink and there are copious amounts of waste paper produced each day. We hope staff and students will consider it worth the walk to a recycling bin to reduce the amount of waste we are sending to landfill.

National Complaints Day!

Did you know that today (Friday 13th) is National Complaints Day http://www.nationalcomplaintsday.com/? Of course we hope that we don't give you cause for complaint, but why not take the opportunity to give us your feedback? You can email us at enquirydesk@abertay.ac.uk or you can fill in a suggestion/comments form and post it into the suggestion box on Level 1. Comments can be given anonymously, but remember to leave your contact details if you would like a personal reply.

  • Bioconjugate Chemistry
  • Biomacromolecules

CLA survey

CLA [The Copyright Licensing Agency] is conducting a 30-day survey of the photocopying of copyright material in a selection of Universities in the UK during the Spring of 2009. Abertay has been chosen to participate in this survey which will run in the Library from 15th January - 25th February. Disruption to library users should be minimal. Data collectors stationed at each library copier will make a note of all copyright material being copied. No personal information on the person doing the copying will be requested. Results from such surveys allow the CLA to distribute copyright fees [already paid by the University] to the appropriate authors, artists and publishers of CLA-licensed material.

Opening hours this week

Happy New Year everyone!

Library opening hours for the week beginning Monday 5th January 2009 are as follows:
  • Mon-Fri 08.45 - 19.00
  • Sat-Sun 10.00-17.00

What's happening in the Library

During registration we have several different activities in the Library. The IT Training Suite on Level 2 has been set up for new students to self-enrol using online registration. Remember that new students must still come to their registration session in person to complete registration, get their IT account and student card and have their IT and library induction. These registration sessions will take place in IT Cluster 1 from 11th - 19th September.

The IT and Library induction session for new students will take place on Level 2 from 11th - 19th September.

On Level 3, Room 3.05 has been set aside for international students to complete their SAAS applications. IT Cluster 3 has also been set up as a dedicated area for pre-registration international students to use so that they can contact friends and family.

Returning students will be able to use the PCs by the windows on Level 3 or on Level 4. If you are a returning student remember that you must re-register. You can do this online from any PC with an internet connection. If you would like to speak to someone in person about re-registering come along to one of the sessions on Level 1 of the Library. Friday 19th in the afternoon has been set aside for helping returning students to re-register and both Finance and Registry staff will be available.

During registration our usual zoning policy has been suspended, but please be considerate towards others when you are using the Library

Changes to interlibrary loan charges

From Monday 1st September, charges for interlibrary loans will be as follows:
  • Interlibrary Loan application/request = £4.00 each (Undergrads and Taught Postgrads; Staff and Research students are not required to pay this charge)
  • Fines for late return = £3.40 (All staff/students)
  • Renewals = £3.40 (All staff/students)

These changes are due to the British Library increasing the cost of this service.

New Library Web Pages

The new Library home page is at https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library

Once there, you can link to various content-rich pages, including Subject Guides, which bring together all your key electronic resources, websites and other useful resources and guidance.

If you are looking for a specific named journal, the quickest route is to click on 'Find a journal' from the Library home page.

Some of the library web pages are still under construction: please be patient as we fill in the gaps. We are grateful for any feedback on problems, typos etc. As you know, we have also recently switched over from Athens to Shibboleth authentication, so please do report any difficulties you experience when accessing electronic resources, as there may be multiple factors involved!

Welcome

A very warm welcome to all summer school and pre-sessional students arriving this week. We hope you find everything you need in the Library, but please ask at the Enquiry Desk if you have any questins. We look forward to working with you.

Changes to login procedures

From 1st August, The University has switched its login method for library databases, electronic journals and books from the old Athens system to a new product known as UK federation or Shibboleth. You will continue to use your Abertay username and password to access resources. Further details and guidance on how to use the new system can be found at:

https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/Library/find/accessingeresources

If you experience or have any questions regarding the change then please contact us on Infodesk@abertay.ac.uk or (01382 308899)

SCOPUS no longer available - but use Web of Knowledge

We no longer have access to the SCOPUS database. We were fortunate to have access to SCOPUS for 3 years at a discounted price. However, this introductory offer has now ceased. Following a period of consultation with academic staff, the decision was made to cancel SCOPUS and retain access to the Web of Knowledge database, as we could not sustain both products. WoK provides vital information for the management of research at Abertay.

You can find Web of Knowledge in the Virtual Library > Databases > Multidisciplinary section. WoK includes access to the Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Humanities Citation Index. It may be accessed on or off campus. Like SCOPUS, WoK provides access to references and abstracts of articles and conference papers, with some links to full text where Abertay subscribes to the particular journal.

Remember, the Virtual Library also includes many subject specific databases, some with full text.

New look for our Portal homepage

A new-look Portal homepage for students will be launched at the end of March - but first we want to know what you think. Based on feedback from over 250 students in our recent survey, we have taken on board your comments and given the homepage a facelift.

We welcome views from everyone, students and staff, so please view the new homepage
then tell us what you think, before 24 March, by contacting us at portal@abertay.ac.uk.

The survey on students’ views of the Portal homepage was carried out in December 2007. The aim was to find out what students consider to be the most important and relevant links on the homepage, what they think about the layout and whether the language and labels used to describe content and services is sufficiently intuitive. For a full report of the survey results, read A student's eye view of the Portal homepage
in the January issue of IS Update.
