New look for our Portal homepage

A new-look Portal homepage for students will be launched at the end of March - but first we want to know what you think. Based on feedback from over 250 students in our recent survey, we have taken on board your comments and given the homepage a facelift.

We welcome views from everyone, students and staff, so please view the new homepage
then tell us what you think, before 24 March, by contacting us at portal@abertay.ac.uk.

The survey on students’ views of the Portal homepage was carried out in December 2007. The aim was to find out what students consider to be the most important and relevant links on the homepage, what they think about the layout and whether the language and labels used to describe content and services is sufficiently intuitive. For a full report of the survey results, read A student's eye view of the Portal homepage
in the January issue of IS Update.

Cross-Search pilot now live!

Our new federated search product, Cross-search, allows you to search across more than one library resource at once, saving lots of time! You can access the pilot at http://crosssearch.abertay.ac.uk

Search one of our special subject categories, which brings together key resources for each School, or across all books and e-books. If Abertay subscribes to a title you will also be able to access the full text.

Note: This is a pilot service and some resources are not yet available to cross-search (these include Barbour Index, Ebrary and Inspec)

Do you like Cross-search? Did you find what you were looking for? Please get back to me with any comments you may have at a.quick@abertay.ac.uk

Help us redesign the Virtual Library

The Virtual Library is one of the main online destinations for Abertay students and staff. But it was designed about 10 years ago and hasn't kept pace with how you search for and use information. Your feedback tells us that it is not always easy to find what you are looking for, whether journal articles on a particular topic, how to renew your books online or when the library is open.

We are looking for staff and students to take part in usability testing - we already have over 150 student volunteers so are particularly keen to hear from staff who would like to try out our new design. We will be doing our first tests in early February 2008 and the results will feed into the next stage. We also want your ideas on the look and feel - how would you like the Library website to look. If you would be interested in taking part in the testing (it should take 30-45 minutes of your time) or to find out more about the project, please email Julie Shortreed
